The Baker Memorial Hall, also called Baker Hall or Baker for short, is known to University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) students as the university’s gymnasium but historians know it more as a place of wartime torment. It was named after Charles Fuller Baker, the former Dean of Agriculture of UP in the pre-war era. During World War II, Baker Hall was a Japanese Internment camp where about 2,500 Allied soldiers (Filipinos and Americans) suffered for 2 years. In February 23, 1945 through the efforts of the Hunter’s ROTC Guerillas (an irregular military unit), the internment camp was seized and controlled, liberating the prisoners.
Baker Hall is an important campus landmark and one of the oldest buildings in the UPLB . It is flanked by two sports fields where athletic and gala events are held regularly. The hall itself played host to a number of functions, concerts, parties and other similar gatherings in the years past. But on a daily basis, Baker Hall is utilized as a gymnasium; the hall has a swimming pool, archery range, basketball and volleyball courts and other facilities suitable for physical education.
Students usually hear stories of ghost sightings in and around the building at night. Also, there is an urban myth that an underground passage exist but the entrance has long been sealed off. Despite its tragic history, Baker Hall stands a testament to Filipino courage and spirit: during the war as prison camp and now as a venue for sports competitions.
